Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
The policy framework that defines qualifications recognised nationally for education and training. |
Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF)
The nationally agreed quality arrangements for the vocational education and training system agreed to by the ANTA Ministerial Council. |
Competency

Qualification
The formal certification issued by an RTO under the AQF confirming that a person has achieved all the requirements for a qualification as specified in a national Training Package or in an AQF course. |
Recognition
A broad term that means recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred. In TAFE NSW it covers four types of recognition services: Pre-arranged RPL, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), TAFE NSW Credit Transfer and Mutual Recognition. |
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The acknowledgement of a person’s current skills and knowledge acquired through previous education, training, work or life experience. In TAFE NSW this type of recognition encompasses all recognition where either formal recognition arrangements have not been recorded on the CIS or where the identical TAFE NSW module has not been completed or where Mutual Recognition does not apply. |
Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
A training organisation formally approved, recognised and registered by a State or Territory registering body. Each TAFE NSW Institute has RTO status. |
Result transfer
Recognition through TAFE NSW Credit Transfer, which results in an exemption from a particular module or unit of competency. Where the student is exempted from the same TAFE NSW module or unit of competency for which they have a previous result (or a module / unit deemed by a TAFE NSW Division to be equivalent to another TAFE NSW module), Pass or Graded Result appears on the student’s transcript. Result transfer is not granted for Mutual Recognition, Pre-arranged RPL or RPL. |
Statement of Attainment
A formal document listing units of competency or TAFE NSW modules achieved towards a qualification under the AQF. |
TAFE NSW Credit Transfer
The recognition of specified learning previously completed in TAFE NSW, within a single Institute or across Institutes. It is granted where the identical TAFE NSW module has previously been successfully completed or a TAFE NSW module deemed to be equivalent has previously been successfully completed. The CIS lists equivalent modules. |
Transferability
The ability of the skills and knowledge acquired to be applied outside the specific context in which they were learned. |
Unit of Competency
A competency standard that specifies the knowledge and skill an individual needs to perform their job to the required industry standard. Units of competency have seven components including unit code, unit title, elements of competency, performance criteria, range of variables and evidence guide. |
Workplace Assessment
The gathering and judging of evidence during normal work activities in order to determine whether a required competency standard has been achieved. Often conducted as an upfront assessment to identify existing skills in relation to training needs, or as an assessment independent of training to recognise existing skills for purposes of issuing a qualification or statement of attainment. |
