School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships

What is a School Based Trainee?

A School Based Trainee at TAFE is a student who commences a Traineeship while they are still at school undertaking the Higher School Certificate (HSC). They combine school, TAFE and paid work for 2 years. The days spent at school, TAFE and work may vary but in general will be 3-3½ days at school, 4-8 hours at TAFE and one day per week in the workplace. In addition, the trainee will be required to spend a portion of their school holidays in the workplace, depending on the particular Traineeship they are completing. All three components of a School Based Traineeship (school, TAFE and work) combine to provide credit towards the HSC allowing the Trainee to earn while they learn.
