Copyright, Plagiarism and Referencing

The development of technology and in particular the Internet has created an environment where information is instantly available world wide. While this means that information is more easily available, it has also created problems with:

Copyright - ownership of information

Plagiarism - copying the work of others by

  • presenting their work word for word as your own, or
  • using their ideas without acknowledging them in an acceptable way

All students should be aware of these issues.

Referencing

To avoid the risk of plagiarism, you must accurately reference all of the sources you use. This includes:

  • providing a list of references (Bibliography)
  • Provide references in the text to any material you quote, paraphrase or summarise
