Veterinary Nursing

Veterinary nurses assist veterinarians in the treatment and care of animals needing medical and/or surgical attention.

Veterinary nurses may:

  • assist veterinarians during consultations, examinations and treatments
  • prepare animals for anaesthesia and surgery
  • perform diagnostic laboratory tests
  • give medication to animals under direction of a veterinarian
  • monitor surgical and anaesthetic recovery of animals
  • maintain the surgery and clinic facilities
  • perform reception duties.

Veterinary nurses work as part of a team in veterinary consulting rooms, surgeries and hospitals.

The work involves working with sick or injured animals and the hours may be irregular, with weekend work involved.

Ways to get into veterinary nursing are:

·         Volunteer work

·         Traineeship

·         School based apprenticeship

·         TVET

·         Prevocation

TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for the veterinary nurses at Kurri Kurri and Scone with both sections having close working relationships with local veterinary clinics. All training is nationally accredited.

Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your training you can specialize in different areas. You may need to do further studies for this.
