Forestry workers grow, harvest, transport and process trees into the products we use in our daily lives.
A forestry worker may:
- prune and thin trees in plantations by hand and using mechanical equipment
- maintain forestry equipment and vehicles
- fell trees safely and efficiently using chainsaws, handsaws, axes and wedges
- operate a wide range of mechanical harvesting equipment
- prepare logs for transportation by removal of limbs, de-barking, log cutting and grading
- mill trees into planks of different sizes and uses
- manufacture products from the sawn planks
- make or sell specialty wood products for domestic and commercial use.
Forest workers may be employed in small work teams. They may work in softwood and hardwood plantations and forests; saw mills; wood processing plants; in rural areas or in isolated bush locations. Much of the work is outdoors and therefore subject to varying weather conditions. Some aspects of the work can be physically demanding.
TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for the Forestry industry at Newcastle. All training is nationally accredited.
