Equine Studies

Equine workers assist with handling horses, maintaining horse health and nutrition and maintaining and cleaning their stables.

Equine workers may:

  • brush and groom, feed, handle and exercise horses
  • assist mares at foaling and care for brood mares and foals
  • check horses for lameness, common injuries, ailments and infections
  • give first aid, medication or other treatment to horses
  • clean and maintain stables and training equipment
  • prepare horses for competition or sale
  • accompany horses to registered race meetings, gymkhanas and equestrian events
  • exercise horses during track work or equestrian activities.

With experience and sometimes further training, equine workers may progress to stable or stud supervisor.

Some lighter weight equine workers may gain employment as trackwork riders or jockeys.

Equine workers start work early in the morning and may be required to work on weekends and public holidays. The work must be done in all kinds of weather. Long hours may be involved.

TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for the Equine industry at Scone. All training is nationally accredited. We cater for international students, see here for more information.

Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment and we work closely with the local horse industry to give students first hand industry experience of the highest quality. Teaching at some campuses is flexible. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your training you can specialize in different areas. You need to do further studies for this.
