Animal Care/Management 
 

Animal attendants covers a diverse area of occupations including zookeepers, wildlife rescue volunteers, animal groomers and trainers as well as workers in pet shops and boarding kennels who feed, water and care for animals.

 

Animal attendants may:

  • prepare food, transport it to feeding areas, and deliver food and water to animals
  • clean and prepare accommodation for animals
  • clear away animal waste, clean, disinfect and look after animal enclosures and cages
  • bathe and groom animals, and medicate
  • treat minor injuries and report serious health problems to veterinarians
  • rescue injured and neglected animals
  • maintain animal records.

   

Ways to get into the animal care industry are:

·         Voluntary work

·         Traineeship

·         School based apprenticeship

·         TVET

·         Prevocation

TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for the animal care industry from trainee to diploma level at Kurri Kurri and Scone. All training is nationally accredited.

 

Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment. Teaching at some campuses is flexible. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your training you can specialize in different areas. You may need to do further studies for this.
