Maritime Operations

If you are considering a career at sea the TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training from deck hands and coxswains to bridge officers and engineers.

A ship’s officer navigates and supervises the safe operation of a ship at sea, in port and at anchor. Ship’s officers co-ordinate the activities of the deck crew and control cargo stowage, loading and unloading operations.

Ship’s officers may:

  • liaise between the captain and the crew of the ship
  • keep watch from the bridge in watches (shifts) while at sea
  • determine the position of the ship and other vessels and obstructions
  • supervise the work done by the crew
  • provide medical and/or first aid treatment for the crew
  • observe and record in the daily logbook
  • coordinate cargo loading and discharge operations and maintenance
  • update charts and other nautical publications.

Ways to get into marine operations are:

·         Traineeship

·         School based apprenticeship

·         TVET

·         Prevocation

TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for trainee marine operators at Newcastle. All trade training is nationally accredited.

Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment. Teaching at some campuses is flexible. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your apprenticeship you can specialize in different areas. You need to do further studies for this.
