Marine engineers control the installation, operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment on ships and offshore structures.
Marine engineers work in engine rooms of cargo ships, dredges, offshore supply and drill vessels, floating production storage and off take facilities, oil tankers, passenger ships and tugs. They need to be familiar with various types of diesel, steam and gas turbine engines.
Ways to get into marine engineering:
· Trainee Engineer (1 years training - after completion of an approved trade)
· Cadet Engineer ( 3 years training – after completion of Year 12)
TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for marine engineers and marine engine drivers at Newcastle to state and national accreditation. All trade training is nationally accredited. We cater for international students, see here for more information. All Hunter Institute courses are STCW95 compliant and AMSA accredited.
Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment. Teaching at some campuses is flexible. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your training you can specialize in different areas. You need to do further studies for this.
