Composites

A composites processor manufactures or finishes composite (fibreglass) products by hand fabrication, hand lay-up, and other processes.

Composites processors may:

  • maintain production and quality assessment records
  • coat moulds with fibreglass either by hand or by using special spray guns
  • laminate fibreglass by smoothing it with rollers and brushes
  • use honeycomb, balsa or foam plastic when stiffening or flotation of a product is required
  • fit together various parts of the product by hand
  • shape and sand products before assembling.

Composites processors may work in one of the following industry areas: reinforced plastics (fibreglass) and composites, boat building, car body building and repair, sporting equipment manufacture and other industrial applications.

Composites processors wear special safety equipment such as masks, gloves and protective clothing, especially when using spray guns. Some of the tasks involved in composites production may require working in confined spaces. Some shift work may be required.

Ways to get into composites are:

·         Apprenticeship

·         Traineeship

                                ·         School based apprenticeship

·         TVET

·         Cert 2 in Plastics – Composite Materials

TAFE NSW Hunter Institute offers training for apprentices and trainee plastics and composites processors at Newcastle. All trade training is nationally accredited.

Our state of the art facilities provide students with a simulated work environment. Teaching at some campuses is flexible. There is a possibility of doing some on the job training in your workplace. After you complete your apprenticeship you can specialize in different areas. You need to do further studies for this.
