Alan French - Creative Industries, Fashion and Media

Previously a public service court reporter, Alan took a journey of reinvention to follow his passion for the music industry. He chose Hunter TAFE to advance his practical skills and technical know-how of music sound production. Alan followed his dreams and gained the skills needed to establish himself as a successful songwriter and producer.

Bethany Hanson - Environmental, Horticulture and Primary Industries

After working in the Hospitality industry, Bethany decided it was time for a career change, so she enrolled in Hunter TAFE’s conservation and land management course. Bethany is a high achiever with great career direction and received the inaugural Hunter Land Management Award for Overall Excellence in Conservation and Land Management. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Environmental Science and has a job that she thoroughly enjoys.

 Clint Higson

Clint Higson - Building Industries

Clint was awarded the Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award in 2009 for his work as Surveyor’s Assistant. He was also part of a survey team for a project which was a finalist in the Infrastructure and Construction section of the Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information Awards in 2011. Clint plans to have a career break from his current employer and take on a role as a Graduate Surveyor, where he will be operating in a FIFO role in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. He is looking to continue his study at University and become a Registered Surveyor.

 Corrin Dedman

Corrin Dedman - Hairdressing and Beauty

Corrin loves making people feel great, which is why she has a passion for the hairdressing industry, working in salons since the age of 14. She has since worked as a Fashion Week hairdresser for Alex Perry’s show. Upon completing her qualifications at Hunter TAFE, Corrin felt well educated, competent and confident enough to start up her own salon.

 Daniel Skafte

Daniel Skafte - Manufacturing and Engineering

Daniel was nominated for Apprentice of the Year for HunterNet Group Training Award in the first three years of his trade apprenticeship. Now a fourth year apprentice, he constantly seeks greater understanding of principles and methods in all aspects of Metal Fabrication and Welding through questioning and research. Daniel is currently doing extra study at Newcastle TAFEi n the pressure ticket welding course, which requires a high level of theory based knowledge as well as performing practical welding skills to an advanced level.

 Darren Nichols

Darren Nichols - Environmental, Horticulture and Primary Industries

“My lifelong love of gardens, gardening and creating an atmosphere with plants was my motivation.” Darren recently received the Annual Australian Institute of Landscape Designers and Managers Award for overall excellence in Diploma of Horticulture (Landscape) as well as a special award for Landscape Architecture. He now works at a Garden Centre, where his clients receive the benefit of his professional and creative training in landscape designs and project management. Knowing he can make a difference in the industry gives Darren a profound sense of satisfaction.

 Darren Rice

Darren Rice - Building Industries

With a love of active work and the outdoors, Darren was well-suited to the bricklaying trade. He was a member of a two-man team selected to represent Hunter TAFE at the Golden Trowel Awards in 2011 and placed third. After achieving the highest marks in the bricklaying section on Newcastle campus and a Distinction grading in this qualification, Darren now aims to complete a Certificate IV in Building and a supervisor’s course in management. His vision is to establish his own businesses, employ apprentices and train them to the high standards to which he was trained, providing them with the same opportunities he has experienced. He would love to become a TAFE teacher in the future.

Dijana Blagojevic - Education for careers and further study

Dijana moved from Serbia to Australia in September 2010, joining her husband who was already living and working in the Hunter. Dijana completed Certificate III in Spoken and Written English with Hunter TAFE. “My English course was the first step in adapting to the Australian community and it helped me not only to improve my English but also to widen my knowledge about Australia. My teachers and classmates helped me to overcome the feeling of separation from my parents and friends in Serbia. They made me feel that I really belong here and kept me in good spirits.” Dijana recently started working with a mining services company, looking after training and induction needs, and says to anyone considering the Adult Migrant English Program, “Coupled with hard work, this is good way to success”.

Edmin Kendall - Building Industries

Edwin undertook the Diploma of Civil Construction Design to upgrade his skills and retrain for the next phase of his life. Although working full time, Edwin demonstrated motivation and commitment to his training, reflected in exceptional results. Edwin is a highly respected professional and assisted other students with their course work.

 Emma Denniss

Emma Denniss - Administration, Business, Library and Real Estate

Administration, Business, Library and Real Estate Emma wanted to use her past business studies and management experience to have a choice of jobs on the Central Coast. Throughout her studies at Hunter TAFE she developed a wide range of skills in Accounting, acheiving distinctions in every graded unit from Certificate III to the Advanced Diploma. Having completing the Advanced Diploma of Accounting, Emma enrolled in a Bachelor of Accounting. She was also able to put her skills to great use as the Treasurer of the P&C committee at her children’s school.
