Dijana Blagojevic

Dijana moved from Serbia to Australia in September 2010, joining her husband who was already living and working in the Hunter. Dijana completed Certificate III in Spoken and Written English with Hunter TAFE. “My English course was the first step in adapting to the Australian community and it helped me not only to improve my English but also to widen my knowledge about Australia. My teachers and classmates helped me to overcome the feeling of separation from my parents and friends in Serbia. They made me feel that I really belong here and kept me in good spirits.” Dijana recently started working with a mining services company, looking after training and induction needs, and says to anyone considering the Adult Migrant English Program, “Coupled with hard work, this is good way to success”.

 Ghasem Safi

Ghasem Safi

Ghasem is a 17 year old Afghani refugee who came to Australia via Iran, and recently won a Hunter TAFE Foundation Encouragement award ($500) for his impressive progress in study. He has successfully completed the Course in Preliminary Spoken and Written English, Certificate I in Spoken and Written English and is now enrolled in Certificate II in Spoken and Written English.

Kidane Ghebrezghi

Kidane was a truck driver in his native Eritrea. Keen to pursue this career in Australia, he has progressed from the Course in Preliminary Spoken and Written English to Certificate II in Spoken and Written English. Kidane improved his English to the point where he was able to attend a special heavy vehicle licencing course, and successfully gained a heavy vehicle licence. Kidane will return this year as a truck driver.

Phannika Newby

Phannika moved to Australia from Thailand, and completed Certificate III in Spoken and Written English with Hunter TAFE. She is the president of her local Thai association, and was recently invited by the Central Coast Multicultural Interagency to be a guest speaker at one of their networking events. A group of 25 attendees heard of Phannika’s experiences since coming to Australia, the settlement issues faced by new Thai students, and how the group is able to support them. She explained how she had organised a recent community event for Buddha’s Day, and outlined other upcoming events. And she spoke very positively of her TAFE experience! The Adult Migrant English Program has empowered this student through her English classes, and she is now a leader in her community, empowering others.

 Sarah Mannel

Sarah Mannel

Sarah completed her secondary education by enrolling in Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) with Hunter TAFE. She achieved exceptional results and gained first place in English, Maths for Further Study, Investigating the Ecosystem, Biology, Chemistry, Advanced Maths and Calculus. Her dedication and persistence was rewarded with an ATAR equivalence of 99. Sarah has strong career goals and believes that TAFE gave her the skills and confidence to continue her education journey at university

Simone Brosow

Since completing the Adult Migrant English Program, Simone (who moved to Australia from Germany) has completed a Certificate III in Aged Care, Certificate III in Children’s Services, gained part time employment and is now studying a Diploma of Children’s Services (Early Childhood Education and Care). Simone has also completed Open Foundation at the University of Newcastle.

 Thejamani (Dinuka) Ramasundara

Thejamani (Dinuka) Ramasundara

Dinuka and her husband arrived in Australia in January 2010 from Sri Lanka. Dinuka enrolled in the Adult Migrant English Program to improve her English language skills. She went on to study a Certificate in Preparing for Further Study, followed by Certificate IV in Preparing for Further Study. Dinuka achieved the second highest mark in NSW for Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) from more than 600 students, and topped the state in Analyse Physics Phenomena in Mechanics and Electromagnetism. “I am hoping to study Civil Engineering at Melbourne University in 2013, thanks to the support and encouragement of my Hunter TAFE teachers and fellow students.”

 Ying Tan

Ying Tan

Ying moved to Australia from China, and joined Certificate III in Spoken and Written English at Gosford Campus as a student of the Adult Migrant English Program. When Ying completed her course, she moved into the Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program. Ying has also set up her own business and is teaching Mandarin classes to school-aged children.
