“All our nursing teachers have bachelor degrees in nursing, but as well as this all of them have industry experience in the role they teach.” Jacqui had worked as a registered nurse for a number of years before making the change to a teaching role at Hunter TAFE. She regularly uses her industry knowledge in the practical aspects of teaching, in the Institute’s state-of-the-art facilities. Jacqui still goes out into the industry and often see Hunter TAFE graduates succeeding along their chosen pathway.

"The fitness industry is booming in Newcastle. We are working with businesses and employers to deliver the skills they want in our graduates. There are a whole range of new activities in the industry including programs like Crossfit and the 24 hour gym cycle. It means there are greater opportunities in the region, but the courses and the qualifications have changed to match the demand." Kathy originally studied P.E. teaching at university and entered the fitness industry as a part-time job. After teaching in high schools for three years she decided she loved the training side of the sector and has been working as a personal trainer since.

"Students are provided with the most current qualification. This comes from having teachers who continue to work in the area they teach and maintain industry contacts and networks. Industry drives us, gives us demands for skills and it is important that we are current with the trends in the industry. Nursing is a huge growth area, not only in the region but across Australia. The local industry gives students lots of opportunity for work experience, learning real-world skills." Teresa started teaching at Hunter TAFE in 2005 and is now Head Teacher of the Nursing and Aged Care section. Every day she uses tangible examples of industry experiences in the classroom
