WorldSkills Winners!

Eight Hunter TAFE students have beaten more than 500 of Australia's best apprentices and trainees to take out medals at the 2008 WorldSkills Australia National Competition.

Mitchell Edwards (Joinery), Nash Mason (Refrigeration) and Justin Laidlaw (Vehicle Painting) all received gold medals at the competition which is often referred to as the Olympics of vocational education and training.

They will now have the chance to qualify for the International WorldSkills competition to be held in Canada in 2009 to determine the best apprentices and trainees in the world.

Joshua Huber (Heavy Vehicle Mechanics) won a silver medal and Ashlee Farrell (Garment Production), Dean Simmonds (IT Software Applications), Bryce Smith (Meat Retailing) and Joel Bryant (Painting and Decorating) all received bronze medals at the prestigious competition.

Karissa Shrubb & Mayor, Greg Piper

2008 Hunter Institute Award

The recipient of the prestigious Hunter Institute Award, for the most outstanding student at Hunter TAFE for 2008 is Diploma in Textiles, Clothing & Footwear student, Karissa Shrubb.
The 22 year-old Design Room Assistant was recognised for her academic excellence and personal achievements, following her nomination as one of 21 Industry Award winners at the 2008 Hunter Institute Awards Ceremony.

The former Stockton resident was selected from more than 53,000 students enrolled at Hunter TAFE. The Hunter Institute Award is sponsored by Lake Macquarie City Council and was presented to Karissa by Mayor, Greg Piper. For more information.
