
Hunter TAFE Student Berias Masseque has been announced as International Student of the Year at the 2012 NSW International Student Awards. The International Student Awards recognise and celebrate international students and the contribution they make within the community.
Since coming to Newcastle from Africa to study a Certificate IV Technical Production Music and Sound Production at Hunter TAFE, Berias has found a passion in volunteering to assist at risk young people and homeless young people. Berias guides young people to access specific services such as Centrelink, counselling and accommodation. He inspires individuals by interacting with them and sharing his own stories, experiences and situations - he draws on his experiences as an international student who has endured many hardships, sacrifices and time away from his wife and children.
Recently becoming a member of the Hunter African Community Council, Berias has taken an active role is promoting education to refugees that have settled in Newcastle, coordinates the soccer club and provides mentoring to young Africans. Berias has freely given his time and skills to help others, his depth of compassion and ability to communicate has been shaped by his personal journey.
