TAFE NSW Hunter Institute

Student Information

Libraries provide services and facilities to support TAFE students with their studies.

Borrowing

To borrow and use the library, you must be a current TAFE student with a TAFEcard, or a recognised Associate Borrower. Please refer to the Borrow and Renew section of this website for details.

Computers and Printing

  • To use computers you must be a current TAFE student with a TAFEcard.
  • Computers offer access to the Internet, online resources, Microsoft Office and Adobe programs, as well as other specialist software.
  • You will need a USB drive or CD to save your work.
  • You will be issued with a username and password at enrolment. Keep a record of this as you will need it to access the Internet and your email on a TAFE campus. Ask your teacher or library staff if you need assistance with your username and password.
  • Wireless access is available in the library. Please ask library staff for details on how to login.
  • Printing is paid for with your TAFEcard. A recharge machine is available in the library to load money onto the TAFEcard. Please bring your own change.

Information Resources

Hunter Institute libraries provide a diverse range of resources to support students including books, magazines, DVDs and electronic resources, literacy and ESL collections and fiction.

  • Online databases, eBooks and eJournals are offered via the Hunter Institute library website.
  • Access is restricted to current Hunter Institute students and staff, and OTEN students living in the Hunter Institute region.
  • Logins - some databases enable you to login with your student username and password. Others use database specific logins. Contact your campus library for login information, or use our online form to have passwords emailed to you. You can expect a reply within 24 hours on weekdays.
  • Instruction Guides to databases and library services can be found on the Guides page.
  • Subject Guides (called LibGuides)
  • TAFE NSW Library Network Catalogue (TAFEcat) can be accessed on the library website, or at http://tafecat.tafensw.edu.au/tafecat.html

Inter-Library Loans

  • Material held in another TAFE library may be borrowed for you on Inter-Library Loan, provided that it is course-related. There is no charge for this service, but some limitations apply.
  • Request at your local TAFE library, or use the Inter-Library Loan Request Form.
  • Renewing inter-library loans is at the discretion of the lending library, and is limited to one renewal only.

Passwords and Logins

Once you enrol in a TAFE NSW course you will be provided with your DEC username and password. You must have this username and password to access the Internet from all campus computers. It is also used to login to access some of the Online Databases available to Hunter Institute TAFE Students.

Your DEC username and password also gives you access to the DEC Student Portal - http://student.det.nsw.edu.au which provides links to:

  • your TAFE email account
  • TAFE student eServices
  • Course information

If you have problems with your DEC username or password, library or campus administration staff can assist you.

Reciprocal Borrowing Agreements

  • These materials are available for restricted loan periods (eg. 2 hour, overnight, 3 or 7 day loan).
