A new partnership between the University of Newcastle and Hunter TAFE has further strengthened the Hunter region's reputation as Australia's energy hub. The creation of an Innovation Incubator is a key initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of joint capabilities in research, training and related services.

The Innovation Incubator will result in researchers at the University's Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER) and training specialists at Hunter TAFE working together to tackle society's emerging energy and resources productivity and sustainability.

The strength and quality of research underway at NIER coupled with Hunter TAFE's innovative training programs will ensure the Hunter continues to go from strength to strength as Australia's energy research and training hub. Hunter TAFE is committed to building and strengthening strategic partnerships with the University in the provision of training for innovative renewable energy systems. The MOU will inform the development of training programs to meet new and emerging skills needed in the energy field and ensure Hunter TAFE continues to provide high quality graduates who significantly contribute to Australian business and industry.

Baking Opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students

Hunter TAFE's Hamilton Campus is working with leading supermarket chain Woolworths to provide pre apprenticeship Baking training for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students. Woolworths developed the program in conjunction with Hunter TAFE's Purrimaibahn Unit and Bakery section, in order to provide participants with an insight into apprentice life and equip them with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to apply for a career in the Baking industry.

At the completion of the program graduates will have a Certificate III in Baking Bread and have skills in the areas of Bread Baking, Sour Dough's, Sweet Yeast Products, Food Safety and OH&S. The qualification allows for a direct pathway to employment at Woolworths, including a possible apprenticeship in Baking with credit and articulation into further training in the industry. The 11 week program (funded by the Australian Government) provides students with a fantastic introduction to the industry and gives graduates the confidence to apply for work with Woolworths. The program not only prepares students for a career in Baking but also many other fields of employment. Training and support in the areas of literacy, numeracy and communication along with team building and work experience, develops excellent work specific skills.

Express Training for Hunter Expressway Alliance
Hunter TAFE recently formed a partnership with Hunter Expressway Alliance (HEA) to deliver an intensive computer and written communication program with 12 foreman and supervisors working on the new $1.7 billion expressway.

The RTA, Thiess, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder Consulting formed the HEA to build the eastern section of the Hunter Expressway, between the F3 Freeway near Seahampton and west of Kurri Kurri. The assistance of Hunter TAFE was requested to provide customised training to up-skill experienced supervisors to enable them to meet the demands of increased technology and written communication for their roles.

The 8 week course covered the basics of emailing, internet/intranet, spreadsheets, presentations, digital images and word-processing with training delivered on the job site during work hours. The program provided the necessary skills and training to improve employee efficiencies and confidence with electronic communication and computer tasks. The HEA partly funded the training along with the Australian Government, under the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) Program through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Job Opportunities on the Central Coast
TAFE Central Coast Campuses have teamed up with JobsOnTheCoast.com.au, a new job search website dedicated to connecting Central Coast residents with local job opportunities.

TAFE has a proven track record in connecting individuals with industry and a partnership with JobsOnTheCoast.com.au will further assist in connecting students with employment opportunities in the Central Coast region. JobsOnTheCoast.com.au was established to dispel the myth that there are no good job opportunities in the region and the website already has over 300 Central Coast job listings for a wide range of industries.

Founder of the website, Tim O'Brien is excited to see support from TAFE Central Coast Campuses and is hoping that this new association will be highly beneficial for students looking for employment in the region. The Central Coast has a skilled and ready workforce but many people entering the job market are unaware of the local employment opportunities available to them. JobsOnTheCoast.com.au aims to connect these job seekers with local businesses who are looking for eager and capable workers.
