TAFE NSW Hunter Institute

Production Nursery

HorticultureHunter TAFE offers a variety of plant propagation courses and horticulture courses. This plant propagation course is for those who are employed as apprentices or for those who want to work in a wholesale or production nursery. A combination of practical experience and lessons at TAFE will ensure you develop the skills required to propagate, maintain and supply a wide range of healthy nursery plants to customers, such as retail nurseries, garden centres and revegetation projects. Your lessons will cover plant propagation methods and cover all aspects of planting from seed to stem. This plant propagation course covers how to recognise and provide information about plants and cuttings, how to prune shrubs and small trees, sample and analyse soils, treat and control plant pests, handle chemicals, operate irrigation systems, and use machinery and equipment. Successful completion of this course could lead to work as a wholesale nursery tradesperson or a plant propagator or to further study in the Horticulture (Wholesale Nursery) Certificate IV course.
